Amethyst Dig

Amethyst Dig

Materials

  • Play Sand
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Water
  • Disposable Bowls, Containers, and Spoons
  • Purple Acrylic Gems

Tools

  • Small Hammer or Mallet
  • Other Tools To Dig Out Gems

Instructions

  1. Mix 1/2 cup play sand with 1/4 cup plaster of paris and 1/4 cup water in a disposable bowl. The mixture will appear very thick at first but will quickly take on a pancake batter-like consistency.
  2. Pour just enough of the mixture into the container you want to use as your mold. Small takeout containers or paper cups work well for this.
  3. When the mixture is slightly firm, press in a few of your purple acrylic "amethysts". You can usually find gems like these in party stores sold as table scatter or in craft stores sold near the candles.
  4. Allow the mixture to harden-this shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.
  5. Mix up another batch of sand, water, and plaster of paris.
  6. Cover your amethysts with the mixture and allow it to dry overnight. Once it's dry, you can remove it from the container.
  7. The next day you can use a small hammer, mallet, or other tools to dig out your amethysts!

Notes

Make sure the tools you decide to use for digging out your amethysts are safe and appropriate for the age of the child!
